SHOWER BETTER TO SAVE WATER & MONEYFree WaterSense Labeled ShowerheadsThe shower is a place where we clean up, cool off, relax, and where we do some of our best thinking and singing. While we are not going to remind you to wash behind your ears, we would like you, in observance of EPA-declared Shower Better Month, to consider this: long showers are costly to the environment and your wallet. On average, a shower lasts about eight minutes and uses more than 16 gallons of water! Across the United States, 1.2 trillion gallons of water are used each year just for showering. However, there are ways to “Shower Better” to save on your water utility and electric bills and conserve the planet’s precious resource. HOW TO SHOWER BETTER:Shorten Showers: Adopt the 5-Minute Shower Challenge A 5-minute shower saves 10 - 25 gallons of water per shower! Shortening your shower time, even by just one minute, can save 550 gallons of water per year. Ways to shorten your shower: - Use a shower timer
- Turn the water off while lathering up and shampooing/conditioning
- Create a 5-minute playlist to play while you shower
- Take a lukewarm or cold shower to encourage getting out faster
Use WaterSense Labeled Showerheads - Replace your showerheads with WaterSense labeled showerheads. It will save the average family about 2,700 gallons of water per year (equivalent to washing 88 loads of laundry).
- According to the EPA, if you use a WaterSense labeled showerhead, you use less water while maintaining sufficient spray force and spray coverage while showering.
- The City of Winter Garden is offering FREE WasterSense labeled showerheads at Winter Garden City Hall reception desk during Shower Better Month (October 1 – 31), one per household/while supplies last (300 W. Plant St., M-F, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm). Switch & Save!

ANNUAL FIRE HYDRANT TESTINGNow - Mid-DecemberThe Winter Garden Fire Rescue Department will conduct fire hydrant flow testing and water line flushing from now through mid-December. This important annual preventative maintenance activity ensures that all the City’s fire hydrants are functioning properly and identifies any needed repairs. It also helps maintain the City’s water quality by flushing all the lines and removing sediments from the system. Residents may notice a brief reduction in water pressure and some discoloration of the water. Discolored water poses no threat to the public’s health. If you notice discolored water coming from your fixtures, please allow the cold water to flow for several minutes. Although residents may experience some temporary inconveniences, the flushing program is necessary to maintain a good water supply for firefighting. Your cooperation is appreciated. Fleet and Facilities Coordinator (Full-Time): The Fleet and Facilities Department Coordinator for the City ensures the efficient operation of daily administrative functions. This position requires exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, as the coordinator is responsible for a wide range of logistical and clerical tasks that support the effective management of departmental resources and daily activities, coordinating vehicle registrations, including tracking renewals and maintaining accurate records, timely processing, and procurement of necessary supplies. Employee interfaces with user departments when necessary to coordinate work orders and work to be performed. The position reports to the Fleet and Facilities Division Manager. A high school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of 4 years of similar experience required. Must be able to type 50 words per minute. Must be able to pass clerical skills and writing assessments. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record. Mechanic II (Full-Time): This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of large pumps, motors, compressors, gasoline and diesel driven automotive and related heavy equipment. The employee of this class performs tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, transit buses, tractors, graders, fire trucks, pumps, gas compressors, heat exchangers, sanitation hydraulic packer trucks, and other related equipment. Employees work under general supervision using independent judgment and initiative as to method of repair after receiving work order. Must be available to work night, weekend, and holiday shifts. Work is reviewed while in progress and at the completion of the job. This position reports to the Fleet Manager. A.S.E. certification in heavy duty brakes required along with one other ASE certification. Must have a high school diploma with additional technical training and a minimum of three years of experience in heavy truck equipment repair or five years of automotive and light truck repair. Must have a Florida commercial driver license or the ability to obtain the license within 6 months of employment. PARKS:
Program Coordinator - Active 50+ (Part-Time): Plans, organizes, implements, and leads recreation programs for senior citizens such as social-recreation activities, arts and crafts, educational programs, and trips/excursions. Position will also work with other senior citizen agencies to act as an information clearinghouse for the community. Must have a high school diploma or GED and prior experience working with senior citizens or leading groups of individuals in a recreational or social setting. Must have a valid Florida driver's license and the ability to operate a 15-passenger van. Must have a CPR certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service skills and the ability to speak in front of groups PUBLIC SAFETY:
911 Dispatchers (Full-time) Experienced or Trainees: Coordinate incoming calls for service with Police resources, assess/prioritize calls, dispatch Officers, maintain/monitor Officer responses, conduct/enter inquiries, relay information, and help with lifesaving instructions. Must have the ability to type proficiently at a minimum speed of thirty (30) words per minute. An online assessment is required. SIGN-ON BONUS for 911 Dispatchers!
There is a $2,000 sign-on bonus for entry level candidates and up to $5,000 for experienced Dispatchers. PUBLIC SERVICES:
Collection Field Technician II - Wastewater Collection System Operator (Full-Time): Minimum of two (2) years of experience with wastewater collection systems to include pipeline cleaning and maintenance, pipeline repair and rehabilitation; and an understanding of inflow, infiltration, and basic system inspection and testing. Must have knowledge and experience with pump installation and repair and lift station equipment and maintenance. Possession of a valid Florida Water & Pollution Control Operations Association Wastewater Collection System Operator C Certificate is preferred. Possession of a valid Florida CDL Driver’s License Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days. High school diploma or GED certification preferred. Must be available and willing to answer emergency or service calls after normal working hours. Lift Station Operator (Full-Time): Perform responsible skilled labor including the repair, maintenance, adjustment, inspection and have a knowledge of the mechanical and electrical equipment involving lift stations. Perform a variety of maintenance, construction, repair or location tasks involving lift station, force mains, etc. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Field Technician I or related experience. Possession of a valid FWPCOA Class “C” Wastewater Collection Certification. Florida CDL Driver License Class “B” with air brakes and tanker endorsements. Based on FMCSA regulations, applicants for employment and existing employees in positions requiring a CDL are subject to pre-employment, post-employment, post-employment, and ongoing testing for controlled substances and alcohol as a condition of employment. High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred. Must be available and willing to answer emergency or service calls after normal working hours.
