Crime Analysis is the process of examining crime reports , bulletins, and other data to identify crime patterns and trends and to disseminate timely and accurate information to operational and administrative personnel for the tactical deployment of resources. Though analysis encompasses all types of crime, the main focus is on crimes against persons and property.
Who’s doing what to whom?
The Crime Analyst assists with active criminal investigations and provides work products used to help prevent and suppress criminal activity, increase arrests, and clear cases. Some of the work products include spreadsheets, bulletins, maps, and charts.
Analysts provide answers
Is it a crime trend, pattern, series or spree?
Affects a large geographic area, over an extended period of time; the same perpetrator is not committing the majority of the crimes; the same target is not repeatedly victimized; similar to a fashion trend
Similar offenses in a defined geographic area are committed over a shorter time period than a trend; has a common proximate cause, including (possibly) the same perpetrator
Occurs over a short time period, where there is reason to believe the same person(s) committed the crimes, as in a serial killer
A group of the same crimes committed almost at the same time, by the same perpetrator
