WORK OBJECTIVE

This is an operational position, which encompasses the day to day Law Enforcement work of the Department.  It is the basic position in the Police services program of the City.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Shall enforce the laws of the State of Florida and Ordinances of the City of Winter Garden, Florida.

Patrol all incorporated areas of the City of Winter Garden to prevent, suppress the possibility of, or investigate criminal activity in any form.

Primary duty is the prevention of crime or offenses and the maintenance of peace at the street level.  Once a crime or offense has been committed, he initiates an investigation and continues it until he is relieved, or the investigations are completed and all necessary action taken.

Prepares written reports as required by regulations, policies, or as directed by his supervisor.

He assists sick or injured persons or circumstances and may frequent places known to be engaged in illegal activities.

Serves as the initial or contact building block for public, community, and civic relationships, through his appearance, attitude, and approach to complaints and offenses in his daily contact with the general public.

Shall develop methods of patrol and characteristics of preventive patrol so as to be cognizant of the areas of concern and of the preventable criminal activity.

Provide court testimony in regard to the prosecution of both criminal and civil cases.  Prepare appropriate paperwork toward prosecution of arrests made.

Carry out any other duties assigned by the Chief of Police or his designee.

Shall be responsible for keeping his supervisor abreast of zone activities.

Police Officer reports to Patrol Shift Supervisor.

If assigned to duties outside of the Patrol Division, the Patrolman shall report to the immediate supervisor in his/her Chain of Command.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum age of 19
• Be a United States citizen
• Must possess a valid Florida driver license
• Associate’s degree
• Required Certification from Police Standards and Training Council
• No police record of criminal activities or involvement in any situations involving moral turpitude
• Never have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Armed Forces
• No tobacco usage in the last twelve months; and no tobacco use after being hired
• Must live within 25 driving miles of the police station upon date of hire
• Ability and demonstrated performance to work with and get along with fellow employees and the general public
• Professional demeanor and conduct
• Exhibit a high degree of loyalty and have a professional outlook on the task to which assigned

Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Previous experience with another law enforcement agency.

Possess a thorough knowledge of the area to which he is assigned.

Possess the capability of writing reports in a concise, easy to understand manner.

Thorough knowledge of the City and State Ordinances, and Laws as they pertain to his assignment.
