Winter Garden Police Explorer Post 901

The Winter Garden Police Explorer Program was created in 1980 to develop a positive relationship between police officers and the youth of our community. The Police Explorer Program is a co-educational program that is a division of the Boy Scouts of America, and is open to youths 14-21 years of age, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity who is of good moral character. 

Winter Garden Police Explorers meet on Monday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the training room, at the Winter Garden Police Department located at 251 W. Plant Street in Winter Garden. During this time,

Explorers will be exposed to different aspects of law enforcement training, to include hands-on practice on the following topics:

  • Basic Laws

  • Crime Scene Investigation

  • Traffic Laws

  • First Aid

  • Police Procedures
  • Police Equipment
  • Fingerprinting

Police Explorer Membership Requirements

  • Must be 14-21 years of age.
  • Must be enrolled in an academic institution 8th grade or higher.
  • Must be of strong good moral character.
  • Must have no criminal history.
  • Must maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA.

The Purpose of the Police Explorer Program

  1. To further the knowledge and understanding of law enforcement through training and experience.
  2. To provide an insight into all phases of criminal justice as a possible profession.
  3. To create a better understanding between the police department and the youth of the community.
  4. To assist the Winter Garden Police Department, in any appropriate manner.
  5. To promote a positive image of the Winter Garden Police Department and the Explorer Post through community service.

Post Activities

Community Service Projects:

The Police Explorers are involved in many community service projects. In the past members of the post have assisted the following groups with their projects:

  • The Police Department's Annual Toy Drive
  • Friends of Lake Apopka
  • Winter Garden Rotary Club
  • Main Street Winter Garden
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Elementary and Middle School Programs
  • West Oaks Mall
  • CFT Summer Sports in Clermont (Triathlon Races)
  • The Oakland Nature Preserve
  • City of Winter Garden Veterans Day Celebration
  • City of Winter Garden Fourth of July Celebration
  • Winter Garden Elks
  • Various local churches
  • Winter Garden Christmas Parade
  • West Orange Trail

Honor Guard

Explorers can also be part of the Winter Garden Police Explorer Honor Guard. The Honor Guard is made of a select group of explorers that perform, depending upon the request or event, which is responsible for the presentation of the Colors at parades, churches, schools, Veterans Day Celebrations, and other activities and events.

Police Ride Along
Explorers ages 16 and older who has been properly trained and have passed the necessary training are allowed to ride with an officer on patrol.
