Beware of Phony Kidnapping Scams
November 07 2012
The “Kidnap Scam” first surfaced in 2007, but the scammers are still at it today. Many times, the scammers call the victim claiming to have a family member held hostage and demanding the victim send ransom money right away via a money transfer service such as Western Union.
They don’t have your family member and are trying to extort money from you, but how did they get your phone number? Sometimes they dial numbers at random and sometimes they use social media sites, such as Facebook, to gather enough information to sound believable.
What should you do if you receive a phone call stating your family member is being held against their will?
- Remain calm
- Call the family member first to confirm they are fine, and if you can’t reach them after repeated attempts, call your local police department for help
- Do not provide the caller with personal information
- Simply hang up
If you have been a victim of this scam or if you have any information regarding this scam, you are urged to call the Winter Garden Police Department non-emergency number 407.656.3636.
